Who invented it?
Claims of a lone inventor go beyond the surviving evidence. Historians instead trace a family resemblance among French poque, German pochen, English brag and other earlier games. A Persian as-nas connection is often proposed, but the direct line remains disputed.
Why was it invented?
This is an inference from the game’s development, not a creator’s recorded mission. Poker combines hidden information, ranked hands, betting and bluffing, letting players compete repeatedly with both chance and judgement. Riverboats and saloons gave that social wagering game room to spread.
When and where?
The clearest early American accounts cluster around New Orleans and Mississippi river traffic. Its ingredients are older and international; its recognisable poker form developed in the United States.

Actor Joseph Crowell described a four-player betting game using 20 cards. It is one of the earliest often-cited descriptions of recognisable American poker.
Jonathan H. Green later wrote about the game on Mississippi riverboats. Travel, commerce and gambling tables helped regional rules circulate.
Poker moved toward the 52-card deck and developed draw, stud, straights and additional hand rankings. Modern poker is an evolution, not one frozen invention.
The Texas Legislature officially recognises Robstown as the birthplace of Texas Hold’em. The record does not identify one verified inventor.
Texas players helped introduce and popularise Hold’em in Las Vegas, where its four betting rounds made it an especially strategic casino format.
